This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certification in the capacity of: Navigational Watch Rating (STCW Reg II/4)Engine Room Watch Rating (STCW Reg III/4)Able Seafarer Deck (STCW Reg II/5)Able Seafarer Engine (STCW Reg III/5)Integrated Rating (STCW Reg II/4, III/4 and II/5, III/5). Please note: RTO to insert on the testamur, the specialist unit group selected from the group choice below.

What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment process that evaluates skills, knowledge, and experience you have gained through your career against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.
You gather relevant workplace evidence and a qualified assessor from the delivering Registered Training Organisation evaluates that evidence. If the assessor determines every competency requirement is met, the RTO issues the qualification.

We are currently in the discovery phase for this maritime qualification. We are identifying Registered Training Organisations that maintain the high standards of assessment required for STCW-aligned certifications.
Why should I register my interest now?
Registering your interest allows us to notify you immediately once a partner RTO is secured. It also helps us demonstrate the demand for experienced seafarers to receive formal recognition for their sea service.
Is RPL the same as completing the full maritime course?
RPL is a formal assessment of the skills you have already mastered through years of work. While the resulting qualification is the same, the process focuses on evidence of existing competency rather than new learning.
Does this qualification cover both deck and engine room work?
Yes, the Integrated Rating stream is designed to recognise dual-competency, allowing seafarers to work across both the deck and engine departments of a vessel.
What if my sea service was completed on international vessels?
Experience on international vessels is highly relevant. During the evidence phase, we would guide you in presenting your international discharge papers and logs in a format that meets Australian standards.
Will I need to perform a practical demonstration?
The RTO's assessor may require a practical demonstration or a technical interview to verify the competencies shown in your evidence portfolio, ensuring your skills meet national standards.
