About This Qualification
This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency in the capacity of Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal. Duties and Functions Duties and functions for which AMSA certificate of competency is required are listed in the MAR Maritime Training Package Companion Volume Implementation Guide.

What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning is a formal assessment process that evaluates skills, knowledge, and experience you have gained through your career against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification.
You gather relevant workplace evidence and a qualified assessor from the delivering Registered Training Organisation evaluates that evidence. If the assessor determines every competency requirement is met, the RTO issues the qualification.

This qualification is a primary requirement for obtaining an AMSA Certificate of Competency as a Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 NC under Marine Order 505. Holding the qualification is one component of the licensing process, which also requires qualifying sea service and medical fitness.

Is this qualification currently available through RPL it?
We are currently in the process of establishing partnerships with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that offer the MAR20424 qualification. While not immediately available, registering your interest ensures you are the first to know when the pathway opens.
Why should I register my interest?
Registering allows us to validate the demand for this maritime qualification with our partners. It also ensures that once a compliant RPL pathway is active, we can immediately begin reviewing your experience against the national standards.
Is an RPL qualification the same as one from full-time study?
Yes. A qualification achieved through Recognition of Prior Learning is identical to one earned through traditional study. It is issued by a Registered Training Organisation and meets the same national standards, making it equally valid for licensing and employment.
Does this qualification automatically grant me an AMSA licence?
No. While the MAR20424 is a mandatory educational component, AMSA certification also requires you to meet specific sea service requirements, pass a medical examination, and complete a final assessment as specified in Marine Order 505.
What kind of engine experience is required for this RPL?
Assessors will look for evidence that you can service and operate marine internal combustion engines, propulsion systems, and auxiliary equipment, as well as handle electrical systems and deck machinery commonly found on near coastal vessels.
How do I prove my sea survival and safety skills?
Evidence often includes records of participation in abandonment drills, fire-fighting training, and the use of survival craft. If your current certifications are expired, the RTO may identify these as gaps to be addressed via targeted training.
